  • Gulf metropolis Dubai, on its never-ending quest to break records, announced the opening of the ‘world’s new tallest hotel’ today, pipping another towering landmark in the city for the title.
  • The 75-story hotel-The gleaming gold 75-storey Gevora Hotel stands 356 metres, or nearly a quarter of a mile, tall.

  • Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) launched the first tests of the world’s first autonomous pods at the World Government Summit.
  • The autonomous pods – launched in cooperation with Next Future Transportation – are designed to travel short and medium distances in dedicated lanes. They can be coupled together in as little 15 seconds or detached – depending on the riders’ destination – in five seconds.
  • The pilot test of driverless units is directed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in the context of transforming Dubai into the smartest city worldwide.

4. Ministry of Tourism stated-8.4% growth in foreign tourist arrivals in January 2018.

  • The number of foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in India saw an 8.4 percent year-on-year (YoY) jump, the Ministry of Tourism stated.
  • The percentage share of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in India during January 2018 among the top 15 source countries was highest from Bangladesh (16.36 percent) followed by USA (14.10 percent), UK (10.81 percent), Canada (4.63 percent), Russian Federation (4.49 percent), Australia (3.60 percent), France (2.76 percent), Afghanistan (1.86 percent) and Nepal (1.59 percent).
  • The percentage share of FTAs in India during January 2018 among the top 15 airports saw Delhi Airport (28.03 percent) in first place, followed by Mumbai Airport (17.47 percent), Chennai Airport (7.17 percent), Goa (6.19 percent), Bengaluru Airport (5.16 percent), Kolkata Airport (4.81 percent), Cochin Airport (3.77 percent), and Amritsar Airport (1.01 percent).

5. Kishan Gangolli claims 5th straight national chess title for the blind.

8. NHAI to Launch Ranking System for Toll Plazas.

  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to launch in ranking system the toll plazas to address issues that affect highway users, such as ease of tolling, electronic tolling/FASTag lane, cleanliness at toll plazas, behavior of the toll plaza staff, deployment of marshals, cleanliness of toilets, functioning of Highway Nest (Mini), wayside amenities and availability of ambulance and cranes in case of any emergency on the highway.
  • Chairman, NHAI Shri Deepak Kumar directed all field Highway Operation Unit officers through video conference on 09 February 2018 to visit at least two toll plazas each across the country and check the above facilities personally to improve the users’ convenience.
