  • West Bengal  Cheif Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that West Bengal is the first state in the country to opt out of ‘Modicare’.
  • Modicare will provide a shot in the arm for the healthcare sector, increasing the insurance cover per family by over 1500% from Rs.30,000 under the extant Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), to Rs.5 lakh.

  • The National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS), which has been dubbed ‘Modicare’ by Mr. Jaitley, has the objective of extending healthcare insurance to 100 million families and raises the insurance ceiling to Rs.5 lakh per family.

  • Reserve Bank of India has made banks’ priority sector norms lenient by saying that all loans to micro small and medium enterprises (MSME) will henceforth qualify as priority sector lending.
  • The sub-target for bank lending to the micro enterprises has been 7.50 percent of adjusted net bank credit or credit equivalent amount of off-balance sheet exposure, whichever is higher.
  • This was a long time demand from banks.

7. Unmanned Russian Cargo Ship Progress MS-08 launched to Space Station.

  • Russian space agency Roskosmos has successfully launched Progress MS-08, an unmanned cargo spacecraft for the International Space Station (ISS).
  • It was launched onboard of Soyuz-2.1a rocket from Russian-leased Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan. Soyuz-2.1a has four strap-on boosters and core engine, all fueled by the mix of kerosene and liquid oxygen.
  • The ISS, which is orbiting 400 kilometers above Earth is currently manned by six astronauts including three from the US, two from Russia and one from Japan.
