The meeting between Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins, Iran has expressed willingness to share its vast oil and natural gas resources with India for the prosperity of its people and offered to simplify visa norms to strengthen the relations between the two countries.

India and Iran have signed nine agreements and have kept their focus on Iran’s Chabahar port. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier in the joint statement, highlighted the importance of the Chabahar port, saying it helped in increasing trade.

The nine agreements that were signed are listed as follows:

  • Maritime Agreement on Chabahar Port and Document on Shahid Beheshti port

  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Exemption of Visa requirements for diplomatic passport holders

2. Vikas Sathaye, Indian Engineer Awarded Sci-Tech Oscar Award

  • Vikas Sathaye, a Pune-born person has been honored with the Scientific and Engineering Academy Award at the Oscars Scientific and Technical Awards 2018 at Beverly Hills in Los Angeles, California.
  • The Scientific and Engineering Award is given for scientific achievements that produce a definite influence on the advancement of the motion picture industry.
  • Vikas Sathaye and his team received the award for his contribution towards conceptualization, designing, engineering, and the implementation of the ‘Shotover K1 Camera System’ during his assignment at Shotover Camera Systems in Queenstown, New Zealand.

3. India, Iran ink pact to avoid double taxation, prevent fiscal evasion

  • India and Iran signed an agreement for Avoidance of Double Taxation and Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with regard to taxes on income.
  • The agreement is on similar lines as entered into by India with other countries, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a statement.
  • The agreement will stimulate the flow of investment, technology, and personnel from India to Iran and vice-versa, and will prevent double taxation.
  •  It will improve transparency in tax matters and will help curb tax evasion and tax avoidance.

4. KP Sharma Oli was sworn in as Nepal’s Prime Minister

  • KP Sharma Oli was sworn in as Nepal’s prime minister for the second time.
  • He has replaced Sher Bahadur Deuba.
  • President Bidya Devi Bhandari administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Oli and two other Ministers, both from the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML), at a function held at President’s Office.

  • China announced that this year’s summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) will be held in the city of Qingdao in June.
  • The SCO is comprised of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, and Pakistan.
  • China had taken over rotating chair of SCO after17th SCO summit concluded in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan in June 2017.

  • Tamil Nadu has won the Senior Women’s National Football Championship for the first time. Tamil Nadu beat Manipur 2-1 to lift their maiden title in the 23rd edition of the Senior Women’s National Football Championship at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Odisha.
  • Tamil Nadu created history by becoming champions in their first-ever final with Indumathi scoring the opener while Indrani made it 2-0. Ratanbala scored the lone goal for Manipur.
  • Indumathi has also adjudged the Player of the Final as well as the Tournament for her superlative performances.

7. India to host 8th Edition of Theatre Olympics

  • The Theatre Olympics, being held in India for the first time, is being organized by National School of Drama, under the aegis of Ministry of Culture.
  • The country’s tryst with the biggest celebration of theatre in the world will take place from February 17 to April 08, 2018 and will be held in 15 cities across India.
